“New Now” at Hamiltonian Gallery
Hamiltonian’s “New Now” exhibition introduces its five newest fellows, who collectively could be described as muted and cerebral with a hint of design. Joyce Lee appropriates light and structure from Old Master paintings in her pastel drawings, which she uses as backdrops for her videos—by forcing viewers to stare longer at the works than they otherwise would, she transforms self-reflection into aimlessness. Science informs the work of Ryan Hoover, whose cyanotypes of networks simplify the relationship between rhizomatic grasses and dual-pole, dual-throw toggle switches. Selin Balci draws on her background in microbiology, establishing parallels in the social patterns of germs and people. Her petri dishes and microbial growths might remind some of Steve Kurtz—only without the FBI warrants and charges of wire fraud.
